Types of counselling: face to face

About me

I am a professionally qualified and experienced psychodynamic counsellor seeing individuals and couples. I offer open ended therapy to individuals and short term couples counselling to couples. I work in private practice and have experience of working as a psychotherapist for NHS in a psychotherapy outpatients department of a large London hospital.

Please email or call me if you would like an informal discussion about your current situation and I am able to offer an initial consultation where you can discuss your needs and find out about my approach to therapy in more depth. An initial consultation costs £50 and lasts for one hour.

I specialise in providing psychodynamic therapy for the treatment of depression, anxiety, obsessions, compulsions, eating disorders, stress, life crisis situations, relationship difficulties, social isolation, poor comminication, personality disorders, thought disorders, addictions, destructive behaviour, problems with controlling impulses, childhood abuse/trauma/deprivation/neglect still having affect in your adult life.

I also use this approach in the Couple Counselling I provide which is appropriate for couples who are having difficulties in their relationship and want to explore how these problems have arisen and what interferes with changing them. Present problems often reflect underlying difficulties from each partner's experiences in earlier life. Couple Counselling aims to understand what lies behind current difficulties, paying attention both to conscious and unconscious factors, in order to bring about change.

Some of the things I aim to help people achieve through couples counselling, (which also forms part of individual therapy, where appropriate), include:

  • Better communication
  • A more stable family life
  • Self-discovery
  • An improved sexual relationship
  • Greater awareness of your partner's needs
  • Reduced jealousy
  • Increased confidence
What happens in this therapy?

I provide you with a safe and confidential environment where I will work with you through a process of talking, listening and thinking. You can use your session to explore what is uttermost in your mind, what is disturbing you, what worries you, what concerns you have, what you are feeling about people in your life or situations that frustrate you that you cant free yourself from. You may wish to bring your dreams so we can understand what you are trying to communicate to yourself about your problems. Together we will work to help you understand yourself better, what motivates you and what stops you achieving what you want in life - be it a happy home life, friends, enjoyment at work or just to feel contented when you are alone. Perhaps you want to be more creative and explore more and get out of feeling stuck, imprisoned or lost? The aim of the therapy I use is to help you to understand more about your experience of life, how this contributes to the way you think about yourself and how this affects your relationship with others.

This process can lead to lasting change and strong personal development, which helps you cope better in the future.

During your sessions we will link together your life's expereinces, your childhood, your dreams, your fantasies, your imagination and sort out what is real and what is the truth. Sometimes we get lost and lose sight of the truth by having to pretend that all is well when inside there is a feeling that all is not well.
